Dear Pearson Community,
As I write this last message for the 2015-16 school year, students have finished their semester two exams, staff are busy calculating final grades, completing report cards and preparing for our next school year. As parents, educators, support staff – our secretaries, caretakers and business manager – we all share in the successes of our students and celebrate their accomplishments. To those students who are graduating and continuing their pathway beyond the halls of Pearson, putting your best efforts forth academically has been as significant as caring for your school and one another.
As this school year comes to an end, we say good-bye to staff transferring to other schools for September or moving on to other opportunities. We thank - Mr. Lee Banks, Mrs. Joy Baxter, Ms. Toni Burton, Ms. Kathy Compton-Morgan, Ms. Michelle Coupe, Mrs. Wendy Lang Brouwers, Ms. Aly Martin, Mrs. Leah McCann, Ms. Sarah Robert, Mr. Mark Rullo, Ms. Melissa Sinclair and Mr. Matt Stevens. Their expertise in the classroom and as advisers of extracurricular activities has contributed greatly to the success of our students.
A special note of recognition to three staff members who are retiring - Ms. Karen Smith-Fisher and Mr. Craig Green have both shared a love of the French language, and individually, the Moderns and Sciences, respectively. Mr. Frank Genovese, our custodian also joins them in their departure after tending to our facility at the end of the school day, preparing it for our staff and students’ return each morning. Together, they are parts of the fabric of Lester B. Pearson High School and have a place in our history and traditions.
We welcome back Mrs. Tanya Andersen, Ms. Lianne Cutler and Mrs. Janet March who are returning from a leave of absence. We offer a warm welcome to new staff joining us in the 2016-17 school year - Mr. Kevin Forsyth, Ms. Jacelyn Lambert, Mr. Adrian Lui, Ms. Elizabeth Lindsay, Ms. Heather Michlik, Ms. Kelly Peterson, Ms. Danielle McCarthy, Ms. Sandra O’Connor, and Ms. Rebecca VanBenthem.
We have been incredibly fortunate to have such overwhelming support from this year‘s Pearson staff within and beyond the classroom; because of this, our students have been successful with both learning and engagement while at Pearson. Their love of the Arts, commitment to Athletics, Clubs, Councils, Crews and Co-curricular competitions have been profound. They are all champions!
Updates about our facility include the main back hall, where benches have been renewed with the addition of a power tower for cell phones and laptops, as well as permanent table stations creating an alternative learning space. Over the summer our Library Centre renovations will be completed and equipped with new furniture and Resources. Painting of walls in a number of classrooms in addition to the installation of a new lighting system for our Drama Stage/Theatre will be completed. A suspended data projector from the catwalk in our Cafetorium will allow increased seating capacity for school wide and community events in the New Year.
And saving the best news for last, our Bell School Start Time for next year will be 9:15 am with a return to a common lunch for all staff and students:
Period 1 9:15 – 10:30 am (includes Morning Exercises)
Period 2 10:34 – 11:48 am
Period 3 11:48 – 12:33 pm COMMON LUNCH
Period 4 12:33 – 1:47 pm
